Fusing Frontiers / HP Spark

Digital / Print / Software development

What began as an experiment into visualising algorithms in print, led to the development of new digital print processes and software (HP Spark) that fuses creative coding to the printed page, bringing with it new ways of working.

Fusing frontiers is the first project that utilises this software, exploring and showcasing some of the capabilities of the software, encouraging others to explore it as well.

A suite of print materials that explore, showcase and test the capabilities of HP Spark and contemplating the creative journeys they may lead us on, as designers, coders, artists and the creatively curious.

The software itself came out of the process I created for the publication 'Our algorithmic Lives'.

HP Spark builds on aspects of  the creative coding language P5.js used in generative art. This enables greater flexibility in the ways that you can use variable digital printing.

After printing 'Our Algorithmic lives' Paul Regan at FE Burman connected me with HP Indigo which led to the creation of software based on this approach. Oswin has been testing iterations of HP Spark helping shape the direction and development of it.

HP Spark is part of HP Indigo’s Smartstream Designer suite of software, available as a plug-in for Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator.
